Children’s Bereavement Support Group Volunteer

About this opportunity

Simon Says Child Bereavement Support are looking for Support Group volunteers to help us deliver support for bereaved children and young people up to the age of 18 at our Southampton monthly support group.

Our support group provides an opportunity for children and young people to spend time with others who have had similar experiences, in a safe space where they can talk openly about how they are feeling.  The group session is themed, and activity sessions are organised and supported by our volunteers. The group provides a safe, fun and engaging environment where they can normalise their grief using therapeutic craft activities to help them tell their story, express their thoughts and emotions and learn some positive coping mechanisms.

Volunteers must be aged 18 or over and a DBS check is required for this role. This volunteering role is based in the Southampton SO16 area.

Commitment  3.5 hours per month

* Ideally experience of working with children, young people or vulnerable groups (beneficial but not essential)

* Empathy and understanding of children who have experienced the death of someone close to them.

* Excellent communication skills are essential, particularly the ability to listen and acknowledge the grief journey and feelings being discussed.

*A willingness to learn and a dedication to the support group each month.

We run 10 sessions a year and ideally you should be available for a minimum of 8 of these.

This is an opportunity to make a real impact in your local community.

  • Full training in bereavement support and safeguarding provided
  • Ongoing support from our staff and volunteer team
