Renters’ Rights Act – changes to the law

Landlords, make sure you are on top of the Renters’ Rights Act
If you are a private landlord, then you must make yourself aware of changes as a result of the new Renters Rights’ Act. This is national legislation that affects the whole country and came into effect on 1 May.

By the end of this month, landlords must ensure they have shared certain written information with their tenants. If you don’t share this information, you could be fined up to £7,000. This information includes The Renters’ Rights Act Information Sheet which must be shared with tenants:

•    A copy of the Information Sheet must be sent to every tenant named on the tenancy agreement.
•    You must use the official document found on the UK Government’s page here.
•    It must be the exact PDF found on the page with no alterations.
•    It must be sent in paper form and delivered to tenants OR sending the PDF as an attachment in an email, text message, WhatsApp message etc.
•    Do not send a link to the PDF sheet as this will not be valid, you must send the PDF as an attachment.

This is a legal obligation that all landlords must do by 31 May or risk a fine.
