Could you be a Hen Collection Driver?
As a volunteer driver you’ll travel to commercial farms and rehoming points within your designated area. Ideally you will be used to driving some distances towing a trailer or driving a van. You’ll also be helping to move and load the crates of hens, so it’s a chance to help save thousands of hens from slaughter, literally transporting them from farms to their new lives in retirement.
About the role
- Drive to and from commercial farms to rehoming points for an average of 10 rehomings per year (frequency varies according to region and demand for hens).
- Help other volunteers collect hens from the farm as well as loading crates into the back of the transport.
- Positively represent the BHWT in all dealings with supporters.
About you
- You have a suitable vehicle such as; a medium to large van (preferably with good ventilation), a horse trailer or a 4WD car with fitted tow bar.
- Have necessary car insurance.
- Have a clean driving licence.
- You are conversant with and supportive of the aims of the BHWT.
Our local rehoming site is Manor Farm (SO31) and the farms you’ll be collecting hens from are typically a 2-3hour drive from that site, each way, so early morning starts are typical. We rehome on a Saturday or Sunday roughly once every six weeks (you don’t need to be available for every rehoming though!).
