Customer care (Purser’s) Assistant on Steamship Shieldhall

About this opportunity

Volunteer on our operational steamship on the hospitality side – this includes serving in the bar, preparing or serving food and hot drinks, checking tickets or looking after the wellbeing of passengers on board (which can be just chatting and helping out generally). We don’t ask for prior experience as training is given, though to work in catering you need to complete an online food hygiene course which the Shieldhall will pay for (Food Hygiene level 2).

We also have volunteering in engineering and deck crew – in fact we are all volunteers. Its a fantastic group of people.

You need to do a day’s on board training each year and some online training too, after that its very much up to you to sign up to what you want to do.

The whole steamship environment is unique and fun and our passengers are very appreciative of the care we give them.

You need to be able to get to Southampton docks, as public transport is not available ,though we try to facilitate car share etc

About Steamship Shieldhall

The Steamship Shieldhall is the largest operational steamship in the UK and a member of the National Historic Fleet. Run entirely by volunteers we provide day trips to sea during the summer season and act as a venue for meetings, training events and celebrations all year. We are based in Southampton Docks but also travel to Poole annually. The Steamship Shieldhall Charity conserves, maintains and operates the ship and exists to preserve this unusual piece of heritage in working order and promote interest and education in maritime history, especially that relating to steam.
