Safeguarding & Mental Health Lead for Board of Trustees

About this opportunity

ROLE GUIDE: Safeguarding & Mental Health Lead

The Krystal Klear Foundation

Direct Report: The Board of Trustees

Status: Voluntary (Founding Trustee)

Location: Remote / Southampton (Monthly Meetings)

THE MISSION

The Krystal Klear Foundation supports youth mental health through creative “paths”—Art, Music, and Horticulture. Our goal is to provide a safe, non-clinical environment where young adults can build resilience and community.

As we transition to a Registered Charity (CIO), we are seeking a Safeguarding & Mental Health Lead. This role is the “Moral and Safety Anchor” of the board, ensuring that our creative activities are backed by rigorous safety standards and a deep understanding of mental health well-being.

THE SCOPE OF THE ROLE

1. Safeguarding Leadership

  • Policy Ownership: Develop, review, and maintain our Safeguarding Policy for young adults (18+), ensuring it meets all legal requirements and best practices.
  • Lead Safeguarding Officer: Act as the main point of contact for any safeguarding concerns or disclosures raised during Foundation sessions.
  • Training: Ensure all trustees and volunteers undergo appropriate safeguarding training (e.g., Level 2 or 3) and understand the referral pathways in Southampton.

2. Clinical Safety & Well-being Standards

  • Risk Assessment: Work with Jason to assess the mental health risks of specific activities and ensure we have “Safe Space” protocols in place.
  • Boundary Management: Help the board maintain the distinction between “Creative Well-being” and “Clinical Therapy,” ensuring volunteers stay within their competency.
  • Incident Review: Oversee a simple system for logging and reviewing any emotional or mental health incidents that occur during sessions.

3. Beneficiary Advocacy

  • Lived Experience Integration: Ensure that the voice of the young people we support is reflected in our safety policies and that their well-being is the primary driver of board decisions.
  • Partner Liaison: Act as a link to local mental health services, GP surgeries, or crisis teams if a beneficiary requires support beyond our creative scope.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

We are looking for a professional with a background in mental health, social work, nursing, or education who has a deep understanding of safeguarding.

Core Competencies:

  • Subject Matter Expertise: Professional experience in mental health (NHS, Private, or Third Sector) or safeguarding.
  • Empathy & Sound Judgment: The ability to handle sensitive disclosures with calmness, professionalism, and strict confidentiality.
  • Clear Communication: Able to explain complex safeguarding concepts to creative volunteers in a way that is practical and empowering.
  • Resilience: Comfortable navigating the challenges of youth mental health while maintaining professional boundaries.

COMMITMENT

  • Monthly Board Meetings: Approx. 2 hours per month.
  • Ad-hoc Advice: Occasional support for Jason if a specific safeguarding question arises during a session.
  • Term: We are looking for a founding commitment of at least 2 years to ensure our safety culture is deeply embedded as we scale.

WHY THIS ROLE?

This is your chance to ensure that a brand-new charity is built on a “Safety-First” culture. While others focus on the art and the music, you are the protector of the people. Your expertise will give parents, partners, and the young people themselves the confidence to engage with us fully.
