Whatever you’re facing, a Samaritan will face it with you
We’re here, day or night, for anyone who’s struggling to cope, who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure.
Samaritans is not only for the moment of crisis, we’re taking action to prevent the crisis.
We give people ways to cope and the skills to be there for others. And we encourage, promote and celebrate those moments of connection between people that can save lives.
We offer listening and support to people and communities in times of need.
In prisons, schools, hospitals and on the rail network, Samaritans are working with people who are going through a difficult time and training others to do the same.
Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy, and Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide.
That’s why we work tirelessly to reach more people and make suicide prevention a priority.
Samaritans are here to listen, no judgement, no pressure, and help you work through what’s on your mind. We’ll never tell you what to do.
If you need advice or specialist support for a specific issue, such as a bereavement or domestic abuse, we’ve put together a list of specialist organisations, including their contact details, which you may find helpful.
The Samaritans are based at 11 College Place, London Road, SO15 2FE
How you may be able to help a suicidal person:
Volunteer with us
Be there for people who desperately need someone.
Our incredible volunteers run more than 200 branches and locations across the UK and Ireland. They offer their time to help to deliver our 24-hour emotional support service to callers in many ways, from answering telephones and emails, to fundraising, generating publicity, administration and finance.
You don’t need to have been through a particular life experience or be from a certain walk of life. Anyone who wants to help others, is tolerant and open-minded is welcome to apply.
What you get out of being a volunteer
Above all you’ll have the incredible satisfaction of knowing you’re helping people who are in despair. In addition, you’ll learn valuable new skills, make new friendships, and be part of an amazing group of people.
I’ve learned so much about life and people. It’s humbling and rewarding to be able to help in some small way by being there for people who need us.
