About this opportunity

TEAM SOLENT SHARKS WHEELCHAIR RUGBY CLUB

Support Staff required

Team Solent Sharks is the only Wheelchair Rugby Club in Hampshire and our players come from as far away as Somerset to Sussex. We offer training and competition from anyone aged 12 and above who is physically disabled. In the last year we have entered teams in Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby’s Premiership, League 1 & League 2 (in the Paralympic discipline) as well as the new Wheelchair Rugby 5s (for those who are a little less disabled – in terms of spinal cord injury, paraplegic as opposed to tetraplegic). Whether you have a missing foot or have cerebral palsy you will be welcomed by the Sharks.

We are based at Solent University Sports Complex and train Tuesdays 6:30-8:30pm and Saturdays 11am-2pm

Wheelchair Rugby is totally reliant on the help of Support Staff, all of which are volunteers,  to get players in & out of the wheelchairs, repair burst inner tubes, change flat tyre’s during games (which happens a lot) and safely get players upright when they have been tipped over.

Training will be given so the Support Staff will be able to do all of these things.

Expenses are available when supporting the team at tournaments.

About Team Solent Sharks Wheelchair Rugby Club

A group of former patients from the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Unit, Southampton Solent University, New Forest District Council and GBWR began conversations about starting a club in September 2012. From that date events moved quickly and a new fledgling club was born. The club went through a six week scheme subsidised by Southampton Solent University and New Forest District Council and designed to help the club become fully established. The University gave us a home at St Mary’s Sports Centre as well as 12 chairs. Now we offer training and competition to anyone from age 12 and up who is physically disabled. We enter players into youth tournaments, the Paralympic leagues, and for the slightly more able, the Wheelchair Rugby 5s.
