Introduction

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance runs a dedicated Youth Programme aimed at inspiring and educating the younger generation across our region. This programme includes delivering fun, engaging presentations to primary-aged children in schools and youth clubs, as well as attending career events to spark interest in emergency services and charity careers.

We are looking for passionate and enthusiastic volunteers to help us deliver these sessions in schools (through assemblies and class visits) and at youth organisations such as Brownies, Beavers, and Cubs.

Our presentation focuses on when and how to call 999 and explains the vital role that Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance plays in emergencies. Sessions include a short role play where children can practise making a 999 call in a safe, supportive environment.

What will I be doing?

Delivering engaging presentations to school groups or youth organisations
Promoting the correct use of the 999 emergency number
Raising awareness of the work of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance
Supporting relationships with schools, teachers, students, and youth leaders
Responding to questions from children in an age-appropriate way

What skills do I need?

Confidence in public speaking and adapting your approach for different age groups.
The ability to “think on the spot” as changes often happen last minute.
Strong communication skills with both children and adults
Willingness to undergo a DBS check
Basic IT skills (to use the presentation and access volunteer communications)
Ideally, access to your own transport – a large prop bag is provided for use during the role play activity
Willingness to be flexible and supportive with logistics of equipment

Time Commitment

Each session lasts approximately one hour, including Q&A. Most presentations take place during the school day, though some are held in the evenings at youth groups.

We ask that all volunteers aim to support a minimum of five sessions per year, with full flexibility to choose when and where to volunteer. All upcoming opportunities are listed on our volunteer app, allowing you to sign up for the missions that best suit your interests and availability. Volunteering with us is designed to be flexible and led by you.

About Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is the independent Charity that brings an advanced critical care team to the most seriously ill and injured patients in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, giving them the best chance of survival and recovery, when the worst happens. Available both day and night, 365 days a year, the Air Ambulance Critical Care Team is called out many times a day to attend to road traffic collisions, sporting accidents, collapses and many other incidents. Highly skilled crews of doctors, paramedics and pilots can be at the scene of an incident within minutes, ready to deliver the same level of care that you would expect from a hospital emergency department. A full range of life-saving equipment is carried on board, including two state of the art ultrasound devices and a blood transfusion kit, helping to save valuable seconds in the vital golden hour. From receiving a 999 call, the Air Ambulance can be airborne within 4 minutes and can reach anywhere in Hampshire within 15 minutes and the Isle of Wight within 20. The charity operates an Airbus H135, the latest generation of EC135 helicopter, which is specially equipped and optimised for night operations. The Air Ambulance is deployed by a specialist paramedic and dispatch assistant working on the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) desk at the South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) control centre. They screen all 999 emergency calls to establish if the patient would benefit from the advanced skills of the Critical Care Team aboard the Air Ambulance. The Charity operates three Critical Care Team vehicles with parallel capability to the Air Ambulance and crewed by a team of HIOWAA doctors and paramedics. The vehicles are operational seven days a week, during the day, providing the same enhanced care as that delivered by the Helicopter, but now able to get to the more difficult to reach urban areas. Additionally, the vehicles provide a vital training platform for Pre-Hospital Emergency doctors and paramedics in order to grow sustainable numbers of these highly specialised professionals. Since the start of flying operations on 1st July 2007, the charity has been steadily expanding its service to the community. During this time, it has achieved several landmark milestones including carrying blood on board all flights, the introduction of regular doctor-led crewing and the start of night operations. The ability to carry out night operations gives us the capability and flexibility to land safely at the scene of an incident, in the dark. Crucially, the Air Ambulance is now able to land on a motorway after dark, which in the winter months can mean any time from 4.00pm onwards, at the height of rush hour traffic. It currently costs £17,750 a day to maintain our life-saving service, and we receive no Government or National Lottery funding for routine operations. It is only thanks to the generosity of the communities that we serve that we are able to keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives.
